In this latest series of paintings, the fragmented geometry of Zinn’s earlier work has been transmuted into the geometry of multi-panel paintings. Within this formal structure, the duality of atmospheric light and minimalist fields of color strike a dynamic balance.

Tamar Zinn is a New York based artist whose work reflects the primacy of intuitive sensory experiences. Both painting and drawing are integral to her studio practice.
EXHIBIT
Liminal Space 2020 / 4-person exhibit at Bryant Street Gallery, CA
curated by Tracey Adams
Tamar Zinn writes that drawing is a “choreography of gestures revealing wordless thoughts. I begin by working a layer of charcoal into the surface of the paper. Then I pause, waiting for an internal signal before making the first gestural mark, exhale and let my hand lead the way, with no conscious intention intruding on the mark-making.”

What is a drawing? Part 4 / Vasari21 2019
by Ann Landi
https://vasari21.com/what-is-a-drawing-part-four/
My drawings serve as an unmediated record of wordless thoughts, emotions, and gestures. The act of drawing is all about taking risks and it is where I feel most exposed as a visual artist. Unlike my paintings, which I can fuss over endlessly, the drawings are completed quickly, and I accept the marks I’ve made without making revisions.
CURATORIAL PROJECT and EXHIBIT
Explorations in Line 2018 / 3 -person exhibit at Garrison Art Center, NY
In “Explorations in Line”, curated by Tamar Zinn, the thoughts and sensations of the artists are reflected in the nature of the lines they make. Working within the framework of abstraction, line plays a pivotal role in their work, not as a means of representing a form, but as a thing unto itself. In their respective bodies of work in sculpture, photography, and drawing, Jaanika Peerna, Tenesh Webber, and Tamar Zinn offer diverse experiences for the viewer.

Vasari21 2017 / Under the Radar
by Ann Landi
https://vasari21.com/tamar-zinn/
Tamar Zinn was about twelve when she discovered the thrill of drawing. Like many artistically inclined New York City kids, she took classes at the Art Students League on West 57th Street, where she first encountered drawing from nude models. . . “I was seeing forms and curves and I loved it. There was a freedom in my line that excited me.”

Each of Tamar Zinn’s paintings has reached the culminating moment when the compositional tension activates and crystalizes the space. The relationship between defined geometry and ambiguous space releases the interaction of the elements, allowing the dance to begin.

Still / Dancing presents a group of paintings in which Tamar Zinn responds to the structure and energy of music through the lens of geometric abstraction. Music, specifically jazz, is often heard in the studio while Zinn is at work. Her paintings are imbued with forms that are rhythmic and melodic, sensual and yet highly structured.
